3 BROTHERS IN BANDA HILIR 1850s-1950s:

1. Haji Mohd Sharif bin Ismail Alyamani, 262-T Banda Hilir
(eldest brother; born c1855-c1877 and died c1906-c1912)

2. Haji Noordin bin Ismail Alyamani, 302 Banda Hilir/Ujong Pasir
(middle brother; born c1860-c1880 and died in 1952)

3. Zainal Abidin bin Ismail Alyamani, Klang
(youngest brother; he was still alive when I was a teenager in 1970s)

Who are the parents of Hj Mohd Sharif, Hj Noordin and Zainal Abidin?

Their parents are Ismail Al-Jailani Alyamani and Inche' Nyonia bt Tuan Sheikh Mohd Sahabudin. This "Ismail Al-Jailani" (Ismail Jelani) was from Permatang Berah in Penang on the mainland near Kg Benggali. He was not a Benggali but a Persian, but the Malays called him Benggali as he wore a big turban.

ISMAIL & INCHE NYONIA
Penang-Banda Hilir-Tengkera marriage

Ismail Al-Jailani Alyamani was from Permatang Berah (beras?) in Province Wellesley, Penang, on the mainland. He was probably a senior man when he married the daughter of Tuan Sheikh Mohd Sahabudin. They lived at 262-T Banda Hilir, Kg Banda Hilir, in Melaka. They had 3 sons in Banda Hilir, Melaka - Haji Mohd Sharif, Haji Noordin and Haji Zainal Abidin.

ISMAIL AL-JAILANI Alyamani married INCHE NYONIA BT TUAN SHEIKH MOHD SAHABUDIN, and they had 3 sons in Banda Hilir, Melaka - Mohd Sharif, Noordin and Zainal Abidin.

Haji Mohd Sharif, Haji Noordin and Zainal Abidin bin Ismail were 3 brothers from the same parents.

Haji Mohd Sharif was the second imam of Masjid Bandar Hilir. He performed the Hajj in 1896. He died after 1906 (date of his Will) and before 1912 (date of his Probate).

Haji Noordin was the third imam of Masjid Banda Hilir. He was the younger brother of Haji Mohd Sharif (second Imam).

Zainal Abidin (Tok Zainal Klang) was Headmaster of ACS Klang and a personal advisor to two British officers who served in the court of Sultan Abdul Samad of Selangor. Sultan Abdul Samad was deceased in 1897, before the Sultan Abdul Samad Building in Kuala Lumpur was ready in 1898.

Haji Mohd Sharif died early, between 1906 and 1912, leaving his 2 younger brothers to look after his 5 young children. His wife probably died along with him or she died after childbirth. The middle brother, Haji Noordin, helped to look after his brother's 3 kids, and the youngest brother, Zainal Abidin, helped to look after 2 kids.

Haji Mohd Sharif's probate was dated 1912, and referred to his Will dated in 1906. So he was deceased between 1906 and 1912. He was probably in his late 30s/40s/50s when he died?

DATUK SHAHBUDDIN BIN HAJI MOHD AMIN
from Desa Kadilangu, Cirebon, Central Java, Indonesia
Imam of Masjid Tengkera &
founder of Masjid Banda Hilir, Melaka in 1820

Datuk Shahbuddin bin Mohd Amin was from Kadilangu, Cirebon in Java, Indonesia. He founded Madrasah/Masjid Banda Hilir in 1820. He had many followers of his tarekat. His makam is in Lorong (Jalan) Panjang. His followers' and relatives' graves are scattered around his makam. The graves stones are unscripted and the owners of the graves are unknown. No record exists.

Nek Ya died on 28 April 1984 and is buried here at Lorong (Jalan) Panjang, but I don't know which grave is hers. I was working in Kelantan and had just delivered my eldest daughter (Nuraishah Bazilah) when Nenek Ya died.

Datuk moyang Haji Mohd Sharif bin Ismail is not buried here, but at Semabok graveyard. His wife Fatimah bt Mohamad bin Salem Alyamani (Patma or Patma bt Sheikh Mohamad bin Salem Al-Yamani) is interred beside him. They died before my parents and grandparents were born.

Bapak said there is Makam Sheikh Sahabuddin in Tengkera. I went to Masjid Tengkera, but I couldn't find his makam. Nobody seems to know about him.

HAJI MOHD SHARIF BIN ISMAIL
(eldest of 3 brothers; born circa 1855-1877; died circa 1906-1912)
Address: 262-T Banda Hilir, Melaka

HAJI MOHD SHARIF BIN ISMAIL married Pahmah @ Fatimah bt Mohamad (Nenek moyang Patma) and had 5 children:

  1. Mohamed Usuf (spelling according to his BC) @ Mohamad Usuf (according to Wasiat Hj Md Sharif) @ Mohd Yusope @ Walid (Bapak's father) -- Mohd Yusope is my paternal grandfather
  2. Mahani @ Nek Ani -- guru Quran in Banda Hilir
  3. Alijah @ Nek Jah -- she was mentally challenged
  4. Amnah @ Nek Amnah -- married to Hj Ahmad bin Hj Abdul Latiff (HABHAL) in Singapore (dulu buat kicap HABHAL)
  5. Asiah @ Nenek Ya -- she also taught Quran in Banda Hilir; died 28 April 1984

From me:
HABHAL = Haji Ahmad bin Haji Abdul Latiff, who is related to Jamaludin bin Mohd Ali (Dr Sabariah Faezah's father). Pak Cik Jamaluddin is Bapak's uncle as HABHAL married Bapak's aunt Amnah (Walid's younger sister). They lived in Singapore and ran the HABHAL soy sauce business, which then changed hands. HABHAL was franchised to Zara Food Industries which operates from Johor.

From Bapak:
Bapak's paternal grandmother, Pahma @ Padma, was fair like a Chinese (putih macam Cina). Pahma's younger brother is Abdul Aziz bin Mohamad (Ami Aziz Al-Yamani) who lived in Jelutong Timur, Penang. Penang relatives described Ami Aziz as a big man but I met a short old man, who ran the car garage at corner of Anson Rd and Burma Rd.

From Abang Sharif (25 April 2012):
When Tok Moyang Mohd Sharif died, Tok Moyang Zainal took Tok Yusope and Nek Jah (actual name is Khalijah/Halijah) under his arm whilst Tok Moyang Noordin took care of Nenek Mahani, Amnah & Asiah.

From me (28 April 2012):
When Tok Moyang Hj Mohd Sharif died, his 2 brothers took care of his children. Tok Moyang Zainal (the youngest of 3 brothers) cared for Tok Yusope (Walid) and Nek Jah (Alijah), while Tok Moyang Noordin (middle brother) cared for the 3 other girls - Mahani, Amnah, and Asiah.

(٠‎ - ١‎ - ٢‎ - ٣‎ - ٤‎ - ٥‎ - ٦‎ - ٧‎ - ٨‎ - ٩‎)

"PAHMAH @ Padma"
Fatimah bt Mohamad bin Salem Al Yamani
Elder sister of Ami Aziz Al-Yamani
Wife of Haji Mohd Sharif bin Ismail

Note: Pahmah was the only name entered for mother's name on the birth certificate of Mohd Yusope bin Hj Mohd Sharif (Walid). In pencil was added 'bt Mohd' and beneath it was written 'Mohd bin Abdullah'.

This is Pahma bt Mohamad, Ami Aziz Al-Yamani's elder sister. Patma is Fatimah but is pronounced as Fatma, Patma or Padma which sounds Indian-Arabic.

I have met Ami Aziz in Penang when I was a little girl and he looked like Opie Zami's father. The man Ami Aziz Al-Yamani whom I saw was of small build but the Penang relatives at Kg Batu Uban said he was a big man. Tok Kalthom said Ami Aziz's photos should be in his house in Jelutong.

Siblings Pahma and Aziz Al-Yamani are important links for linking the Melaka and the Penang relatives. Their father is Shaik Mohamad bin Salem Al Yamani, a Yemeni Arab who came from Hadramaut, South Yemen, to Batu Uban, Penang.

Now there are 2 men who could possibly be Pahmah's father:

  1. Sheikh Mohamed bin Salem Al-Yamani (family tree)
  2. Mohamad bin Abdullah (written in pencil in BC of Mohamed Usuf @ Mohd Yusope)

Aziz Al-Yamani's mother (Hawa bt Jelani, Ismail Al-Jailani's daughter) was descended from Tahir and from Ismail or Nakhoda Kechil. Does this imply why he was of short stature (iaitu, orangnya pendek)?

CAPTAIN FRANCIS LIGHT'S ARRIVAL IN PENANG in 1786

There are many versions of stories as to what happened in Penang before and after Captain Francis Light's arrival in Penang.

Version 1:
Captain Francis Light arrived at Pulau Jerejak before setting up Fort Cornwallis at George Town.

Version 2:
Dato' Jennaton and Nakhoda Nan Intan cultivated lands in Batu Uban and Bukit Jenaton. Since the large area was well-cultivated they had asked Nakhoda Kechil to cultivate land at Tanjong Penaga, which he did.

Version 3:
Nakhoda Kechil moved from Tanjong Penaga to Jelutong when Captain Francis Light came to grab Tanjong Penaga by force.

Version 4:
The Malay paddy planters were forced to move out of Tanjong Penaga (now George Town), and they had to obtain the Sultan of Kedah's permission for another piece of land; Nakhoda Kechil obtained Jelutong while Dato' Jenaton obtained Bukit Jenaton (Minden Heights), and Nakhoda Nan Intan obtained land at Batu Uban down to Glugor by the sea. They were probably also cultivating those areas before Captain Francis Light arrived in Penang.

Masjid Batu Uban was constructed in 1734. Captain Francis Light arrived on Penang island around 1786. So, Nakhoda Nan Intan was already living in Batu Uban well ahead of Captain Francis Light's arrival in Penang.

Version 5:
Nakhoda Kechil cultivated land at Jelutong and Tanjong Penaga. He greeted Captain Francis Light and his people when they arrived at Tanjong Penaga, where he cultivated paddy, etc.
