Munshi Abdullah

From Mahadhir Mohamad (19 June 2013):
Sumber terbaru, hj nordin ada kemungkinan ada kaitan dengan munsyi abdullah. Hj nordin sering berkunjung ke kg ketek, kg hulu di rumah sorang kaya di sana atas dasar hubungan saudara. Di sana terdapat rumah asal munsyi abdullah. - Mahadhir Mohamad, 19 June 2013

From me:
Abdullah was a bright Indian Muslim child and the only son of his parents. He grew up and became a scribe and language teacher (munshi). Munshi Abdullah had worked in Malacca first and then went to Singapore to work for Stamford Raffles.

Full name: Abdullah bin Abdul Kadir
Call name: Munshi Abdullah

Faith: Islam (Muslim)
Childhood: strict religious upbringing and scholarly education

Early life:

1797: Birth in Kg Pali, Malacca
1798: Aged 1
1799: Aged 2

1800: Aged 3
1801: At the age of four, he learnt to scribble on a schoolboy's slate (kalam).
1802: Aged 5
1803: At the age of six he suffered a severe attack of dysentry.
1804: At the age of seven, his developmental milestones were lagging.
Abdullah could not read the Quran. While other children chanted Quranic verses, he traced out the written Arabic characters with his pen. Did he have paper and an ink pen or did he write on a slate board? He was seven years old, when his strict father, furious at his son's backwardness, sent him to the  Quran school in his village (Madrasah Quran Kg Pali). His father monitored him closely and was careful not to let his son neglect his Quran studies.
This was the same way that a relative from Kg Hulu, Syed Sheikh bin Syed Ahmad had brought up his only grandson, (Dr) Syed Mohamed bin Alwi Al-Hadi in his home at 410 Jalan Jelutong in Penang. He was raised by Syed Sheikh's third wife, Sharifah Zainah Al-Mashhur. Datuk Dr Syed Mohamed Alwi Al-Hadi became Penang's eminent gastrosurgeon.
For writing exercises, his father made Abdullah write the Arabic names of all the people he saw at the masjid (which masjid, Masjid Kg Pali or Masjid Kg Hulu?). He was severely punished for making mistakes until he wrote without any mistakes.
Abdullah had to write the complete Quran and translate an Arabic text into Malay. Where is his handwritten Quran today? Was Hafiz Ghulam Sarwar aware of Munshi Abdullah's handwritten Quran? Which particular text did Abdullah translate
1805: Aged 8
1806: Aged 9
1807: Aged 10
1808: At age 11 he was skilled and could document things and wrote Quranic text and got paid.
1809: Aged 12
1810: At age 13, he taught Islam to Muslim soldiers at A'Famosa, the Malacca fort.
He was writing Quranic Texts for the Muslim soldiers of the Malaccan Garrison. By 13, he was teaching Islam to mostly Muslim soldiers of the Indian garrison stationed in the Malaccan Fort. From them he learned Hindustani. The soldiers called him Munshi (sometimes spelt munsyi, it is Malay for a "teacher" of language), a title which stuck to him for the rest of his life, and by which he is still known.
But his father insisted he get on with his Malay studies which were just beginning, and his first real chance of a secular education. The first big opportunity he had to prove his worth to his parents, was when his father was away from the office, Abdullah wrote out the bond, a signed document required for a ship's Captain. As the Captain was leaving with his document, and Abdullah having been paid a dollar for his efforts, in walked his father, Abdul Kadir. Pleased at his son's abilities, Abdullah was allowed to understudy his father in his petition-writing business, and was sent to study under the finest scholars in Malacca.
He was an avid reader of all the Malay manuscripts he could lay his hands on, and his inquiring mind gave his teachers no rest until they answered his questions. He went through great lengths to find tutors who could expound to him the intricacies of Malay idiom. He sat at the feet of and impressed learned visitors from other countries.
In December 1810, Sir Stamford Raffles arrived in Malacca and hired the 13-year old young Abdullah as interpreter to communicate with the native rulers in their language (Malay?). Abdullah, the youngest employee, was one of the scribes and copyists preserving Malay literature and manuscripts, in Raffles's office in Singapore.
1811: At age 14, he was already considered an accomplished Malay scholar.
He documented the British Java invasion expedition, which later entered into his book, Hikayat Abdullah.
In his later book, "Hikayat Abdulah", Abdullah's diary accounts are the only eye-witness records of preparations for the British "1811 Java Invasion" expedition.
Raffles had suggested taking him along but his mother refused to part with her only child. They were to meet nine years later in Singapore. He had a very high regard for Sir Stamford Raffles.
1812: Aged 15. Worked in Malacca.
1813: Aged 16. Worked in Malacca.
1814: Aged 17. Worked in Malacca.
1815: Aged 18. Abdullah married and worked in Malacca. He had 4 children-3 sons and a girl.
In 1815, Reverend William Milne (b. 1785 - d. 27 May 1822 Malacca), a 'London Missionary Society' missionary arrived and started free Bible classes for local children which 18-year old Abdullah attended, just to learn English.
Rev. Milne soon discovered Abdullah's proficiency in Malay, and made him his teacher. Other Western missionaries followed, and Abdullah was kept busy teaching them Malay and translating the Gospels.
Another missionary who arrived in September 1815, was a German, Rev. Claudius Henry Thomsen who became Abdullah's lifelong friend. He and Thomsen translated parts of the Bible into Malay, and produced lots of other printed material.
Abdullah had four children from his marriage in 1815 to an unnamed woman (d. 17 May 1840). Towards the end of 1836 his favorite and only daughter died at the age of eight.
1816: Aged 19. Worked in Malacca.
1817: Aged 20. Worked in Malacca.
1818: Aged 21. Worked in Malacca. ACS Malacca was founded on 11 November 1818.
On 11 November 1818, Abdullah witnessed the foundation-stone laying of the Anglo-Chinese School (ACS) building by the ex-Resident of Malacca, Major William Farquhar (later Resident of Singapore 1819-1823).
1819: Aged 22. Worked in Malacca.
Sometime after June 1819, Abdullah came to Singapore to make a living as an interpreter. He taught Malay to Indian soldiers, British and American missionaries, and on occasion, was private secretary to Raffles. Some of the leading merchants like Edward Boustead and the Armstrong Brothers learnt Malay from Abdullah.
1820: Aged 23. His father died. Abdullah went to work with Raffles in Singapore. He liked Raffles.
1821: Aged 24. Worked in Singapore.
1822: Aged 25. Worked in Singapore.
His close friend, Rev. Thomsen left Malacca for Singapore on 11 May 1822.

1825: Aged 28. Worked in Singapore.

1827: Aged 30. Worked in Singapore.
1828: Aged 31. Worked in Singapore.
1829: Aged 32. Worked in Singapore.
1830: Aged 33. Worked in Singapore.
In the late 1830s he assisted Rev. Benjamin Peach Keasberry in his school and Mission Press, and helped Rev. Keasberry to print a large number of books. Abdullah was engaged to assist him in polishing his Malay linguistic skills, and under Keasberry's guidance and encouragement, wrote his own life story.

Abu Bakar bin Hj Ahmad

Hj Ahmad bin Awal is the son-in-law of Hj Noordin (menantu Hj Noordin). Hj Ahmad was also known as Ami Amad or Mohamad. Hj Ahmad married Hjh Bedah bt Hj Noordin, Hj Noordin's middle daughter. Hj Ahmad's son is Abu Bakar (not the same Abu Bakar bin Ibrahim).

Walid (Mohd Yusope bin Hj Mohd Sharif) and Hjh Bedah bt Hj Noordin were first cousins (sepupu).

Bapak (Hj Abdul Rashid bin Mohd Yusope) and Abu Bakar bin Hj Ahmad were second cousins (dua pupu).

Abu Bakar bin Hj Ahmad is Bapak's dua pupu (second cousin). Abu Bakar is the son of Hj Ahmad @ Mohamad @ Ami Amad.

Abu Bakar was photographed with Hj Noordin and Walid's family at Pulau Besar in 1948 (Bapak's photo collection). Bapak had identified Abu Bakar. From the photo, Abu Bakar looked tall, big and sturdy as a young Malay man. This man is a different man from Abu Bakar bin Ibrahim.

Masjid Tengkera

Masjid Tengkera in Malacca was built in 1728 while Masjid Batu Uban in Penang was built in 1734. This means that Nakhoda Nan Intan was in Malacca first before he sailed up to Penang to settle there till he died.

Mahadhir Mohamad supplied photos of Masjid Tengkera and whatever information that is known about Nakhoda Nan Intan and his connection to the masjid.

saya juga telah ke masjid tengkera utk mengesan makam tuan sheik sahabudin. malangnya seorang ahli jawatankuasa masjid, encik ismail hamid tidak menyedari kewujudan tuan sheik sebagai imam mahupun berkenaan kewujudan makam. yg ada dakwanya adalah makam syeik idrus yg dakwanya waris mohammed saleh @ nakhoda intan. beliau juga percaya mohammed saleh yg berasal dari pagar ruyung telah terlebih dahulu membuka masjid tengkera sebelum belayar ke pulau pinang. begitupun beliau tak dpt menjelaskan bagaimana keturunan mohammed saleh kemudiannya terdiri dari kaum peranakan india.
... hj mazlan, ... juga tidak mengetahui byk asal usul masjid an nur banda hilir. bagaimanapun jkk masjid tengkera en ismail hamid berkata keturunan mohammed saleh masih ada berdekatan masjid tengkera. - Mahadhir Mohamad, 11 June 2013.

3 BROTHERS IN BANDA HILIR 1850s-1950s:

1. Haji Mohd Sharif bin Ismail Alyamani, 262-T Banda Hilir
(eldest brother; born c1855-c1877 and died c1906-c1912)

2. Haji Noordin bin Ismail Alyamani, 302 Banda Hilir/Ujong Pasir
(middle brother; born c1860-c1880 and died in 1952)

3. Zainal Abidin bin Ismail Alyamani, Klang
(youngest brother; he was still alive when I was a teenager in 1970s)

Who are the parents of Hj Mohd Sharif, Hj Noordin and Zainal Abidin?

Their parents are Ismail Al-Jailani Alyamani and Inche' Nyonia bt Tuan Sheikh Mohd Sahabudin. This "Ismail Al-Jailani" (Ismail Jelani) was from Permatang Berah in Penang on the mainland near Kg Benggali. He was not a Benggali but a Persian, but the Malays called him Benggali as he wore a big turban.

Information from Bapak:
???

ISMAIL & INCHE NYONIA
Penang-Banda Hilir-Tengkera marriage

Ismail Al-Jailani Alyamani was from Permatang Berah (beras?) in Province Wellesley, Penang, on the mainland. He was probably a senior man when he married the daughter of Tuan Sheikh Mohd Sahabudin. They lived at 262-T Banda Hilir, Kg Banda Hilir, in Melaka. They had 3 sons in Banda Hilir, Melaka - Haji Mohd Sharif, Haji Noordin and Haji Zainal Abidin.

ISMAIL AL-JAILANI Alyamani married INCHE NYONIA BT TUAN SHEIKH MOHD SAHABUDIN, and they had 3 sons in Banda Hilir, Melaka - Mohd Sharif, Noordin and Zainal Abidin.

Haji Mohd Sharif, Haji Noordin and Zainal Abidin bin Ismail were 3 brothers from the same parents.

Haji Mohd Sharif was the second imam of Masjid Bandar Hilir. He performed the Hajj in 1896. He died after 1906 (date of his Will) and before 1912 (date of his Probate).

Haji Noordin was the third imam of Masjid Banda Hilir. He was the younger brother of Haji Mohd Sharif (second Imam).

Zainal Abidin (Tok Zainal Klang) was Headmaster of ACS Klang and a personal advisor to two British officers who served in the court of Sultan Abdul Samad of Selangor. Sultan Abdul Samad was deceased in 1897, before the Sultan Abdul Samad Building in Kuala Lumpur was ready in 1898.

Haji Mohd Sharif died early, between 1906 and 1912, leaving his 2 younger brothers to look after his 5 young children. His wife probably died along with him or she died after childbirth. The middle brother, Haji Noordin, helped to look after his brother's 3 kids, and the youngest brother, Zainal Abidin, helped to look after 2 kids.

Haji Mohd Sharif's probate was dated 1912, and referred to his Will dated in 1906. So he was deceased between 1906 and 1912. He was probably in his late 30s/40s/50s when he died?

DATUK SHAHBUDDIN BIN HAJI MOHD AMIN
from Desa Kadilangu, Cirebon, Central Java, Indonesia
Imam of Masjid Tengkera &
founder of Masjid Banda Hilir, Melaka in 1820

Datuk Shahbuddin bin Mohd Amin was from Kadilangu, Cirebon in Java, Indonesia. He founded Madrasah/Masjid Banda Hilir in 1820. He had many followers of his tarekat. His makam is in Lorong (Jalan) Panjang. His followers' and relatives' graves are scattered around his makam. The graves stones are unscripted and the owners of the graves are unknown. No record exists.

Nek Ya died on 28 April 1984 and is buried here at Lorong (Jalan) Panjang, but I don't know which grave is hers. I was working in Kelantan and had just delivered my eldest daughter (Nuraishah Bazilah) when Nenek Ya died.

Datuk moyang Haji Mohd Sharif bin Ismail is not buried here, but at Semabok graveyard. His wife Fatimah bt Mohamad bin Salem Alyamani (Patma or Patma bt Sheikh Mohamad bin Salem Al-Yamani) is interred beside him. They died before my parents and grandparents were born.

(٠‎ - ١‎ - ٢‎ - ٣‎ - ٤‎ - ٥‎ - ٦‎ - ٧‎ - ٨‎ - ٩‎)

Bapak said there is Makam Sheikh Sahabuddin in Tengkera. I went to Masjid Tengkera, but I couldn't find his makam. Nobody seems to know about him.

HAJI MOHD SHARIF BIN ISMAIL
(eldest of 3 brothers; born circa 1855-1877; died circa 1906-1912)
Address: 262-T Banda Hilir, Melaka

HAJI MOHD SHARIF BIN ISMAIL married Pahmah @ Fatimah bt Mohamad (Nenek moyang Patma) and had 5 children:

  1. Mohamed Usuf (spelling according to his BC) @ Mohamad Usuf (according to Wasiat Hj Md Sharif) @ Mohd Yusope @ Walid (Bapak's father) -- Mohd Yusope is my paternal grandfather
  2. Mahani @ Nek Ani -- guru Quran in Banda Hilir
  3. Alijah @ Nek Jah -- she was mentally challenged
  4. Amnah @ Nek Amnah -- married to Hj Ahmad bin Hj Abdul Latiff (HABHAL) in Singapore (dulu buat kicap HABHAL)
  5. Asiah @ Nenek Ya -- she also taught Quran in Banda Hilir; died 28 April 1984

From me:
HABHAL = Haji Ahmad bin Haji Abdul Latiff, who is related to Jamaludin bin Mohd Ali (Dr Sabariah Faezah's father). Pak Cik Jamaluddin is Bapak's uncle as HABHAL married Bapak's aunt Amnah (Walid's younger sister). They lived in Singapore and ran the HABHAL soy sauce business, which then changed hands. HABHAL was franchised to Zara Food Industries which operates from Johor.

From Bapak:
Bapak's paternal grandmother, Pahma @ Padma, was fair like a Chinese (putih macam Cina). Pahma's younger brother is Abdul Aziz bin Mohamad (Ami Aziz Al-Yamani) who lived in Jelutong Timur, Penang. Penang relatives described Ami Aziz as a big man but I met a short old man, who ran the car garage at corner of Anson Rd and Burma Rd.

From Abang Sharif (25 April 2012):
When Tok Moyang Mohd Sharif died, Tok Moyang Zainal took Tok Yusope and Nek Jah (actual name is Khalijah/Halijah) under his arm whilst Tok Moyang Noordin took care of Nenek Mahani, Amnah & Asiah.

From me (28 April 2012):
When Tok Moyang Hj Mohd Sharif died, his 2 brothers took care of his children. Tok Moyang Zainal (the youngest of 3 brothers) cared for Tok Yusope (Walid) and Nek Jah (Alijah), while Tok Moyang Noordin (middle brother) cared for the 3 other girls - Mahani, Amnah, and Asiah.

"PAHMAH @ Padma"
Fatimah bt Mohamad bin Salem Al Yamani
Elder sister of Ami Aziz Al-Yamani
Wife of Haji Mohd Sharif bin Ismail

Note: Pahmah was the only name entered for mother's name on the birth certificate of Mohd Yusope bin Hj Mohd Sharif (Walid). In pencil was added 'bt Mohd' and beneath it was written 'Mohd bin Abdullah'.

This is Pahma bt Mohamad, Ami Aziz Al-Yamani's elder sister. Patma is Fatimah but is pronounced as Fatma, Patma or Padma which sounds Indian-Arabic.

I have met Ami Aziz in Penang when I was a little girl and he looked like Opie Zami's father. The man Ami Aziz Al-Yamani whom I saw was of small build but the Penang relatives at Kg Batu Uban said he was a big man. Tok Kalthom said Ami Aziz's photos should be in his house in Jelutong.

Siblings Pahma and Aziz Al-Yamani are important links for linking the Melaka and the Penang relatives. Their father is Shaik Mohamad bin Salem Al Yamani, a Yemeni Arab who came from Hadramaut, South Yemen, to Batu Uban, Penang.

Now there are 2 men who could possibly be Pahmah's father:

  1. Sheikh Mohamed bin Salem Al-Yamani (family tree)
  2. Mohamad bin Abdullah (written in pencil in BC of Mohamed Usuf @ Mohd Yusope)

Aziz Al-Yamani's mother (Hawa bt Jelani, Ismail Al-Jailani's daughter) was descended from Tahir and from Ismail or Nakhoda Kechil. Does this imply why he was of short stature (iaitu, orangnya pendek)?

CAPTAIN FRANCIS LIGHT'S ARRIVAL IN PENANG in 1786

There are many versions of stories as to what happened in Penang before and after Captain Francis Light's arrival in Penang.

Version 1:
Captain Francis Light arrived at Pulau Jerejak before setting up Fort Cornwallis at George Town.

Version 2:
Dato' Jennaton and Nakhoda Nan Intan cultivated lands in Batu Uban and Bukit Jenaton. Since the large area was well-cultivated they had asked Nakhoda Kechil to cultivate land at Tanjong Penaga, which he did.

Version 3:
Nakhoda Kechil moved from Tanjong Penaga to Jelutong when Captain Francis Light came to grab Tanjong Penaga by force.

Version 4:
The Malay paddy planters were forced to move out of Tanjong Penaga (now George Town), and they had to obtain the Sultan of Kedah's permission for another piece of land; Nakhoda Kechil obtained Jelutong while Dato' Jenaton obtained Bukit Jenaton (Minden Heights), and Nakhoda Nan Intan obtained land at Batu Uban down to Glugor by the sea. They were probably also cultivating those areas before Captain Francis Light arrived in Penang.

Masjid Batu Uban was constructed in 1734. Captain Francis Light arrived on Penang island around 1786. So, Nakhoda Nan Intan was already living in Batu Uban well ahead of Captain Francis Light's arrival in Penang.

Version 5:
Nakhoda Kechil cultivated land at Jelutong and Tanjong Penaga. He greeted Captain Francis Light and his people when they arrived at Tanjong Penaga, where he cultivated paddy, etc.

Haji Jaafar's house @ Duyung

Haji Ashari was the first imam of Masjid Banda Hilir. His son Haji Jaafar bin Hj Ashari was the 5th imam of Masjid Bandar Hilir. His full name is Haji Jaafar bin Haji Ashari bin Muhammad Salleh.

Haji Jaafar's original house was near to 302 Banda Hilir. However, the land was lost to a Singaporean Chinese when Haji Jaafar's son-in-law used it as collateral and his loan fell through. The land is tanah wakaf and belongs to Masjid Banda Hilir.

These photos are from Mahadhir Mohamad.

This is the original site in Banda Hilir where Haji Jaafar's house once stood. The house was dismantled and moved by the sidang after the land was taken by the Singaporean Chinese. This is tanah wakaf and belongs to Masjid Banda Hilir. As such, it cannot be traded, bought or sold; it is Masjid Banda Hilir property.

Kalau berjumpa pun tiada perbualan akademik melain bertanya khabar. Adiknya adalah rakan sepermain sewaktu kecil.
Saya sertakan 3 photo dari sisi lain rumah Hj Jaafar di Duyung dan 3 photo Masjid Tranquera. - Mahadhir Mohamad, 13 June 2013.

Tamby Chik bin Haji Noordin

Haji Mohd Sharif, Haji Noordin & Tok Zainal Klang = datuk & datuk saudara Bapak
Tamby Chik bin Haji Noordin = uncle Bapak, sepupu Walid
Rahim bin Thamby Chik = sepupu Bapak?

Marai Seinen Club Mei 1942

After the Japanese Administration called for disbanding the KMMM (Kesatuan Melayu Muda Melaka) in Mei 1942, for alleged links to the communists, the Marai Seinen Club (MSC) was established in its stead. Many Malacca Malays joined the MSC as it fought for Malay rights and advancement.

One of the persons in charge of its Games Bureau (Biro Permainan) was Tamby Chik bin Haji Noordin.

Is Tamby Chik the son of Haji Noordin bin Ismail of 302 Banda Hilir?

Haji Rahim and Abdullah went to Makkah 21 March 1957

This is an old photo which I received from Mahadhir Mohamad. It is about Hj Rahim and Abdullah going to Makkah. This photo was dated 21 March 1957. It was taken in front of the 302 Banda Hilir house in Malacca. The 1957 photo shows the two men leaving the grounds of 302 Banda Hilir. They were headed to the bus station at Semabok junction.

Photo of 21 March 1957. Here, there is an arch with thatched roof, 2 huge brick columns, and high perimeter walls on both sides of the two brick columns. There is a house with thatched roof in the background, beyond the two columns.

Travel route from Melaka to Klang

Haji Rahim and Abdullah probably travelled from 302 Banda Hilir to the Semabok intersection, taken a bus there to the central bus station in Melaka, and from there to Tampin to Seremban to Kajang and KL, and finally reaching Klang. In 1957, the Hajj pilgrimage ships docked at Port Swettenham (now Port Klang).
